Machulince – Vráble – Buhunice – Kolárovo - Nitra

Milling have always been specific part of ancient crafts. Mill as a place that „ties up“ otherwise uncontrollable natural energy of water or wind for flour milling had represented a mysterious, even mystic place in Medieval culture. Lot of mysterious stories and legends about haunted mills connected with millers and mills are the common part of local traditions. Milling in the Nitra Region has a rich past. Developed agriculture connected with grains growing, as well as big amount of suitable watercourses contributed to establishment of big number of mills. Water mills were built on each river, known became for example Žitava river. Specific type of mills used mainly on Danube and bottom part of Váh were shipboard water mills allowing to transfer mill on the river according to rate of flow in order to always get maximum output. That was necessary mainly in dry summer months when traditional water mills were fighting with lack of water in rivers.

Our cognitive journey will start in water mill in Machulince, near Topoľčianky. Mill is in Mlynská street, close to the square. The owner has repaired it and created a little water power plant. Building also serves as a pension with restaurant.

The second stop will be reconstructed mill in Žitava region - Mašek’s Mill in Horný Oháj, nowadays part of town of Vráble. Mašek’s mill was gradually reconstructed from 1996 with objective to transform all the surroundings in family eco-farm and agrotouristic centre. Beside private Museum of Milling they grow more types of crops here, raise agricultural animals, produce own honey or offer a possibility of fishing. Also various educational events are taking place at the eco-farm.

The third stop will be extant water mill in Bohnice, built on Sikenica brook. The mill is completely repaired and it serves as a museum. The mill’s building is divided into three functional parts. Residential part consists of room, kitchen and storeroom with adjacent basement and it is furnished with period furniture and inventory. The second part was formed by a barn currently equipped as operational room. The third, different part, is formed by vertically divided mill room ans space for millstone.

The fourth stop will be the unique water mill in Kolárovo that is an exact copy of the last functional water mill on Danube. Water mill is situated in natural area on peninsula on flow of Váh and Little Danube. The area is accessible via the longest roofed wooden bridge in the Central Europe. Beside water mill there is also a small technical museum and open-air folk museum of traditional living.

The last stop will be Slovak Museum of Agriculture in Nitra. The part of museum, having the biggest collection of exhibited objects with agricultural theme, is also the open-air folk museum of Slovak village with functioning mill. Mill was originally a water mill, but later it was electrified and water drive was replaced by electricity.
